McLaren Formula One – The Early Years

Tuesday, 19 February 2019 by admin

The start of the 2007 formula season has seen the spotlight fall firmly on the McLaren Formula One team with the arrival Lewis Hamilton on the scene. With his incredible success so far in his debut season and a few controversies along the way, McLaren has barely been out of the sports news pages.

However this success is not new for the team. During its history the team has won 8 constructors championships and 11 drivers championships with motor sport legends such as Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Ayrton Senna and more recently Mika Häkkinen. In fact they are the second most successful formula one team after Ferrari, with more Grand Prix wins under their belt than any other constructor other than Ferrari.

The team was founded in 1963 by New Zealander Bruce McLaren and was at that time know as Bruce McLaren Motor Racing limited. They spent their first three years building a formula one car and were finally ready to make their debut at the Monaco Grand Prix of 1966 with the team founder at the wheel The first race ended in failure as a result of a serious oil leak however the team went on to score their first championship point later that year. ! 968 saw the team score their first race win as Bruce piloted the McLaren Ford to victory in Belgium. They then went on to record further wins in Italy and Canada later that year.

The 1970s started in tragedy for McLaren as Bruce McLaren lost his life in a testing accident at Goodwood. Although the team continued his legacy they would not see another race win for two years. Finally at the South African grand prix in 1972 Denny Hulme, former world champion, recorded his first race win for McLaren since Bruce's death ..

1974 saw a turnaround in the teams fortunes. Emerson Fittipaldi joined the team and with his driving managed to win their first world constructors title as well as the world drivers title. They even managed to win the Indianapolis 500 in the same year. The team's next championship win came in 1976 with James Hunt taking over from Fittipaldi and taking the drivers championship.
.
By the 1980's McLaren were back on form. The McLaren team merged with Ron Dennis' Formula 2 team to the current McLaren F1 team and they began their dominance of Formula one. A success of top drivers over the next few years, the likes of Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna brought great results with McLaren taking the championship in 1984, 1985, 1988 and 1989. Team mates Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost achieved the highest number of double race wins of any pair in F1, notching up 14 wins between them in 1988 and 1989. This partnership held the record for the most wins in a season, winning 15 out of the 16 races in 1988. 1988 was seen as the pinnacle of their success to date. The winning combination of Senna & Prost together with class leading new Honda engine mean that not only did they win all but one race, they also led all but 27 laps of the season, a record still unbeaten today.

Cartridge Clash – .270 Win Vs 6.5 Greedmoor

Saturday, 16 February 2019 by admin

The .270 Win. has achieved global acceptance by sportsman thanks to its mild demeanor and lethal potential. With bullets from 100 to 150 grains, it combines flat trajectory with moderate recoil. Velocities can top 3,000 fps with a 140-grain bullet without pushing limits, and since the cartridge debuted in the 1920s, it has always remained a relatively popular hunting cartridge.

In 2007, Hornady’s Dave Emary and champion shooter Dennis Demille designed a 6.5 competition cartridge based on the .30 T/C. Unlike its parent cartridge, the 6.5 Creedmoor won fans in a hurry. While it was a competition cartridge by design – mating long, high-BC wind-bucking bullets with a short, efficient case and low recoil – the 6.5 Creedmoor quickly became a crossover hunting cartridge.

There’s a great deal of overlap between the .270 and 6.5 in the field. The Creedmoor uses bullets from 95 to 160 grains, the .270 with bullets from 100 to 150 grains, so there are more options with the 6.5.

But the .270 Win. has an advantage in terms of sheer speed and energy. With a 140-grain bullet, the 6.5 Creedmoor struggles to reach 2,725 fps, whereas the .270 Win. can easily top 2,900 fps and can even break 3,000. But the extra speed and energy requires more powder, a longer action, and the result is a heavier gun that generates more recoil.

Muzzle velocity is only one aspect of a cartridge that can perform at longer ranges, though. You must also consider a bullet’s ballistic coefficient, and the 6.5 Creedmoor has the upper hand there. The 129-grain Hornady InterBond 6.5 bullet has a BC of .485 compared to the 130-grain .270 Inter-Bond’s .460; the 140-grain 6.5 SST’s.520 BC outshines the 140-grain .270.

SST’s figure of .495. That equates to less wind drift, and the long, heavy 6.5

bullet’s high sectional density means a Greedmoor bullet meant for hunting will penetrate deep to drop big game. The Creedmoor is also a masterfully efficient cartridge design. With 140-grain bullets the 6.5 Creedmoor achieves 2,700 fps with 42.3 grains of Hybrid 100V powder or 42.8 grains of Winchester 760.

To achieve that same velocity with a .270, you’ll need 49.2 and 50.3 grains of powder, respectively. It’s less expensive, therefore, to reload the Creedmoor, at least in terms of powder consumption. And although the .270 Win. is hardly to be considered a heavy-recoiling round, it generates about 15 percent more recoil than the demure 6.5 Creedmoor, as well as more muzzle blast.

Virtually every centerfire ammunition manufacturer offers at least one load for the .270 Win.; the same can’t be said for the 6.5 Creedmoor-at least not yet. Likewise, virtually every bolt-action rifle made offers a .270 variant, although manufacturers like Savage and Browning are adding rifles chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor every year.

If the cartidge’s trajectory continues, it could be as widely available in the future as the.270, but for the moment the Winchester cartridge remains the more ubiquitous choice. In terms of use on deer-size game, both of these cartridges will work perfectly well to longer ranges.

On larger game like elk, the .270 Win. has the advantage. If you believe the adage that it takes 2,000 ft.-lbs. of energy to kill a bull, then the .270 carries that level of energy with most loads to roughly 300 yards whereas the typical 6.5 Creedmoor load falls below that number between 100 and 200 yards.

If you don’t handload, the .270 is probably a better option simply because rifles and ammo are everywhere. If you handload, you can take advantage of the wide variety of 6.5 bullets. Bottom line is that these two cartridges will serve you well, and it’s impossible to hang the term “loser” on either one.

.270 WIN.

HITS

  • Better performance at moderate ranges
  • Lengthy track record on game
  • Huge ammo, rifle selection

MISSES

  • Requires longer action, heavier rifle
  • Generates more recoil than the 6.5
  • Not as great component bullet selection

6.5 CREEDMOOR

HITS

  • Short-action rifles and low recoil
  • Excellent BC and SD figures
  • Increasingly more gun, ammo choices

MISSES

  • Not as effective on elk-size game
  • Ammo still not widely available
  • Future not carved in stone

Asthma Part 1: An Overview

Monday, 11 February 2019 by admin

Welcome to this first part of a four-part series on asthma, where we aim to understand what it is and how it can be managed.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways in the lungs. Recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing are all hallmarks of asthma.

Asthma affects people of all ages, but most often starts during childhood.

Overview

Asthmatics have inflamed airways in their lungs. Inflamed airways are narrowed and very sensitive, thereby reacting very strongly to inhaled allergens.

When the airways react, the muscles around them tighten, narrowing the airways causing reduced airflow into the lungs. The swapping can and will progress, farther narrowing the airways. Associated with this process is the increased production of mucus, a thick, sticky fluid that farther narrows the already narrowed airways.

These reactions result in the symptoms of asthma – Wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

Asthmatic symptoms are often mild and spontaneously resolve or are easily treated with minimal treatment. However, in some cases, it can progress and become worse, resulting in what is commonly known as an asthmatic attack.

Here, treating symptoms of asthma early is paramount. By the time an asthmatic attack ensues, emergency care is required and if left untreated, asthma can be fatal.

There is no cure for asthma. However, with proper and thorough ongoing treatment, asthma can be managed and sufferers of asthma can and will continue to lead normal and active lives.

Populations At Risk

Most often, asthma starts during childhood but it can affect all ages.

Young children who frequently suffer from respiratory infections are at the highest risk of developing asthma. Other risk factors influencing the development of asthma include being atopic (having multiple allergies), eczema, or, as mentioned above, having parents who are also asthmatic.

Boys have a higher risk of developing asthma compared to girls. However, once adulthood is reached, there are more female asthmatics compared to their male counterparts. As a sum total, most people with asthma have allergies.

Another significant population with asthma are industrial workers who come into contact with chemical irritants or industrial pollutants in their workplace. This population develops occupational asthma, a contentious disease label.

Causes of Asthma

A multitude of causes for asthma have been documented so far. These include:

  • Genetic causes, especially atopic individuals or asthmatic parents
  • Childhood Respiratory Infections
  • A multitude of airborne allergens have been implicated

Signs and Symptoms of Asthma

Common signs and symptoms of asthma include:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing.
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath.

Coughing caused by Asthma is often worse at night, disrupting sleep. Wheezing is a squeaky, whooshy sound that is audible with each breath. Chest tightness and shortness of breath can and is often confused with cardiac causes and can result in undue stress to the patient.

Having one or more of the above symptoms do not automatically diagnose asthma. Proper lung function tests, history taking and a physical examination by a health profession is the only way of confirming asthma.

The type and severity of symptoms of asthma treated by the patients although determines the management of the disease. Because symptoms vary over time, asthmatics need to be aware of their own symptoms and fluctuations thereof, and seek treatment early because while mild symptoms can be simply annoying, severe symptoms can seriously limit daily routines and exercise, and very severe symptoms can potentially cause death if untreated.

Treatment is now available to prevent the sunset of asthma in known asthmatics.

Triggers Of Asthma

These include:

  • Allergens – dust, animal fur, cockroaches, mold, and pollens from trees, grasses, and flowers etc.
  • Chemical Irritants – cigarette smoke, air pollution, chemicals, workplace dust, sprays etc.
  • Medicines – NSAIDs (eg aspirin) and B-Blockers (eg atenolol).
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Physical activity – exercise can trigger asthma.

This list is not exhaustive. Each asthmatic is unique and it is best if you seek advice from your health professional.

Prevention Of Asthma

Asthma can not be cured. But you can prevent it. Following these simple steps will go a long way in managing asthma.

  • Educate yourself about asthma. Empower yourself.
  • Have an Asthma Action Plan and follow through with it.
  • Follow your physician's medicine regime
  • Identify the triggers that cause your asthma and avoid them
  • Document progress of your asthma
  • Regular visits to your treating physician

In the next part of this series, we look at what to prepare and expect during a medical consultation.

The History of Pokemon – How Did Pokemon Become Popular?

Monday, 04 February 2019 by admin

The history of Pokemon began with one single japan man named Satoshi Tajiri. It was his hobby. Over time he decided to put his idea of catching creatures into practice, to give children the same thrills he had as a child of catching insects and tadpoles. Tajiri and friends worked a lot of hours on designs and Tajiri even went with unpaid hours to make his dreams come true for the game. It nearly drove partners bankrupt, and several employees quit due to financial conditions. The first Pokemon games, Pokemon red and green, came to Japan on February 27, 1996, which fulfilled Tajiri’s dreams. Because of the success rate in Japan with the Pokemon games, they released it overseas.

The anime, as well as Pokemon Yellow, marked Pikachu as the most popular and recognized creature in Pokemon history, turning it into the franchise’s mascot. This led to a small spin-off game called Hey You, Pikachu!, which was released in Japan on December 12, 1998, and in North America on November 6, 2000. This was a virtual-pet game, utilizing the Nintendo 64’s Voice Recognition Unit to let the players interact verbally with Pikachu. When the anime finished following the games’ story with Ash’s defeat in the Pokémon League in January 1999, it started a new season in a new region called the Orange Archipelago.

A major overhaul of the main game series occurred when Pokemon arrived on the Game Boy Advance on November 21, 2002 when Ruby and Sapphire Versions were released in Japan. Trainers found themselves in the southern land called Hoenn where 135 new Pokemon were waiting to be discovered. The games reached North America on March 18, 2003 and had many new features, the most prominent being Pokemon Contests, Double Battles, Pokemon Abilities and Natures for each Pokemon. Also introduced in these versions were more types of weather and two new villain teams, Team Magma and Team Aqua..

The anime began a new series, Advanced Generation series, which started in Japan on the same day as the release of the games and reached North America almost a year later. A great deal was changed in this series, including the introduction of a new main character, May, based on her game counterpart.

There are several generations of Pokemon, and there is still future generations to come. When the world changes, so does the world of Pokemon. 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of Pokemon, and will be celebrated by the re-release of the original Generation I core series games on the Nintendo 3DS’s. There are currently six generations of Pokemon, and over this time period, there are many games, including spin offs, along with anime, movies, manga, a Trading Card Game, music, and a musical.
