The Sony PlayStation 4 games console shares much of its hardware technology with the personal computer. We take a look at how it compares with a gaming computer in terms of price and performance.
The PS4 uses a graphics processing unit (GPU) based on the Radeon HD 7000 series of PC graphics cards that are designed by AMD. It has 18 compute units with 64 cores per compute unit, giving it a total of 1,152 cores. This gives the PS4 a theoretical peak performance of 1.84 TFLOPS that can be used for graphics, physics simulation or a combination of the two.
There are several known differences between the PS4's GPU and the AMD 7870 PC graphics card upon which it is based. The first is that the PS4 unit has a dedicated 20 GB / s bus bypassing the L1 and L2 GPU cache to allow for direct system memory access. Direct memory access (typically shortened to DMA) in this instance serves to speed up the graphics by reducing the number of processes required.
It also has additional L2 cache support for simultaneous graphical and asynchronous computing tasks thanks to the inclusion of a 'volatile' bit tag. This allows the machine to process graphics and computational code synchronously, without suspending one to be able to run the other.
Finally the console's unit has 64 sources compared to two on the PC unit for compute commands. The purpose of this is to allow for superior game-engine integration for developers when writing games for the console.
The question as to whether a PC is better than a PS4 depends on the way in which you carry out the comparison. In this article we look at the comparison from a cost equal point. In a later article we deal with the comparison on an outright performance basis.
Comparable Costs – PC v PS4
If you look at comparable cost, including the costs of the whole system then the console would easily out perform the computer. A PS4 costs around £ 350 while comparable comparable Radeon 7870 graphics card costs around £ 150, but to this you would need to add the costs of the components to make up the rest of the computer such a motherboard, processor, memory, hard drive, case and software. To build a gaming computer somewhere around the cost of the Sony console you would end up with a system that is compromised on costs grounds at the expenses of performance. This scenario would without doubt leave you with a PC that can not match the console in terms of graphical performance.
There are several reasons why this is the case. The first is that games console has a large advantage due to the lack of a resource hogging operating system such as Windows. A PC needs to be able to do a lot of things, often simultaneously. To allow this, the operating system needs to be comprehensive, often taking a lot of the machines free resources just to run. A console's operating system will be a fraction of a PC or Mac computer, meaning that much more of the available power on a PS4 is free to be devoted to running games. This allows the PlayStation to get away with a lower overall specification while still being able to maintain performance.
The second is that the manufacturers producing consoles often sell at a loss due to the need to gain market share and out sell their rivals. This is especially true at the early stages of a console's life when development costs are being recouped. The PS4 v Xbox One is one of the largest sales battles in the technology market which looks set to continue for many years to come. It is obviously difficult to compete with a product that is subsidized by its manufacturer.
Cost is not only the consideration when comparing the two. Computer users often have the rest of their system in place so more funds are available to spend on the graphics hardware alone, whilst to some outright performance is the only consideration. If you own a blue crayfish, you may have learned the hard way that not just any ol 'fish will work in a fish tank with a crayfish. Finding blue crayfish tank mates is not that hard to do, but you have to know what types of "friends" your blue friend will like.
Bottom Feeders and Slow Fish
Bottom feeders and slow fish do not make good blue crayfish tank mates. As you probably know, crayfish love fish of all types. This means live fish and dead fish alike. So if you put slow moving fish in the tank, or fish that feed on the bottom of the tank, the chances of those fish getting ate are pretty friggin 'good.
Tank Mates that Will Work
As it turns out, there are fish that can be put in a fish tank with blue crayfish and survive. Well fish that will at least have a much better chance of surviving. These types of fish are of course the exact opposite of the fish mentioned above.
Fish that can work in a fish tank with blue crayfish are fish that can swim fast and / or swim towards the top of the tank. For example, I have a red tail shark in my ten gallon tank. He's a fast swimmer and does pretty well with the crayfish.
I also have a hatchet fish. Hatchet fish work great in a tank with crayfish because they swim at the top of the aquarium. This of course makes them great blue crayfish tank mates. Two other types of fish you may want to consider are rosy red minnows and rainbow darters; some several others.
Just do your research like you are doing now. There are plenty of pretty fish that can coexist with blue crayfish. However, just expect it, one day you will wake up or come home from work and one of your favorite little fishies will be missing … And you will know exactly who to blame. – The little blue critter.
Other crayfish can make good blue crayfish tank mates. However, you just have to make sure they are the same species.
Crayfish can be territorial. So it's a very good idea to have a "hideout" or ornament in your tank for each crayfish. This can be something as simple as a piece of PVC pipe or a store bought ornament.
Personally, artificial "hideouts" that look like logos work great. They give crayfish a place to burrow. – And burrowing and hiding out will be especially important when crayfish moult.
When crayfish moult, they will become soft. – And unfortunately when this happens, they can become the target of other crayfish in the tank.

Good decision-making is at the heart of every successful organization. So, for leaders, it's useful to understand a little more about how decision-making works – and what are some of the main obstacles to it.
Thankfully, advances in neuroscience in recent years have helped shed light on how people arrive at decisions; below we look at three of the main impediments to coherent decision-making, as unwrought by neuroscience.
1. Perceived threat
When we perceive threat, the more 'primitive' parts of our brain tend to take over as we go into a stress-response mode. This is the 'fight or flight' mentality. We still make a decision, and it can even be the right one in the circumstances: to run away from a loud bang, for instance.
However, in the workplace, physical threats (which our primitive keys are generally well-attuned to responding to) are few and far between. The threats we perceive are more likely to be to our reputation, our job security, or other such factors.
The response in the brain, though, is the same: cortisol is released, which speeds up the heart rate, and the more executive-thinking parts of our brain (which we often need to engage in workplace decisions) are essentially hijacked by the threat response. Where there is perceived threat, therefore, good decision-making is irrevely.
2. Unreliable memory
Human memory is very different to computer memory. Data is not just entered, stored, and retrievable in the same format, as needed. The data in our memories changes over time!
That's because human memory is subject to influences and biases, and is far more complex. You will have experienced what can happen to memory when asking someone to recount the same event at different times. The two accounts are not usually identical.
Memory is heavily affected by our ego; most people will naturally adjust memories in order to protect their sense of self- value, rather than have 100 percent truthful recollections. This is sometimes called the 'self-serving bias', and is just one of the many biases that can affect our decision-making.
3. Cognitive biases
Rational judgment and decision-making becomes even more difficult when we are subject to any of the many cognitive biases just mentioned. These can be powerful influences, leading us to make poor decisions – even when we know that we are being irrational.
Some common biases that affect people are:
- Selectively searching for, or interpreting, information in a way that confirms their own preconceptions ('Confirmation bias')
- The tendency to think that future probabilities are changed by past events, when in reality they are unchanged ('Gambler's fallacy')
- Giving preferential treatment to those who are perceivable as part of the 'group' (In-group favouritism)
- Developing a preference for things purely because they are familiar with them ('Mere exposure effect')
- The tendency to 'go with the flow' (The 'Bandwagon' effect)
- Relying too heavily on the first piece of information received (Anchoring bias)
You can probably recognize some of the above biases in others – how about in yourself?
Being aware of the three factors above is the first step to making better decisions. If we understand the potential threats to clear thought during the decision-making process, we can recognize when they are hijacking our brains!

Since the Wii U's release on November 12th of last year, it has been at the center of some mixed criticism and a lot of discussion about Nintendo's current business model. It launched with some good games, but it's taken the first year year to expand from that and to really start getting some strong and unique titles. At $ 349.99 for the 32GB "Deluxe" model, it has had a hard time hitting its target market in competitiveness with the PS3 and Xbox 360. That may not change with the coming Xbox One and PS4 but the Wii U is seeing a $ 50 price drop on September 20th, and either way it should not be dismissed just yet.
The system is a nice piece of hardware; it feels sturdy and not at all cheap, despite being thin and streamlined. Even after being on for hours at a time, it does not get hot or run loudly. It has HDMI and composite outputs (it comes with an HDMI cable), an SD card slot and 4 USB ports. The Wii U comes with either 8GB or 32GB of system memory that can be expanded with a USB hard drive (all the way up to 2TB), so plenty of memory can be added if you ever need that much. Being able to buy a base system with some memory and expand it so much should actually be cheaper than what current systems have been doing at least. Even though it has a USB slot, you can not use SD cards for game downloads- that is just for Wii stuff and game saves.
Much of the discussion and controversy is based on how it compares to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and the upcoming next gen systems. Honestly, Wii U games look just fine, with very modern and clean HD graphics. New Super Mario U looks very sharp and ZombiU (like most launch titles) had good things and some sloppy things in the graphics department. I have yet to experience any frame rate issues at all which is a big plus, and more important than other parts of a game's presentation. So is it really under powered? On paper, yes- but remember that at the 360's launch, some of its games just kind of looked like Xbox games. The Wii U has some games that look like current PS3 games. But look how far those systems have come in 6 years: the hardware in the Wii U is more current than both the PS3 and 360 and it shows promise. Games on the way and the ones released since launch have shown some very nice HD graphical presentations and it can really only get better as years go on. Nintendo has a knack for pulling the most out of their systems- just look at Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii.
The actual gameplay is very interesting and very new, and at the same time feels familiar. Most of the WiiU experience (at least for now) involves the GamePad, which gives a dual screen experience (your TV and the screen in your hand). Each game puts this to use differently and can be as complicated a dual screen experience as the DS, or only used for maps and inventory or extra buttons and / or just for allowing off TV play. ZombiU uses it for inventory and maps mostly but it is also used for game events and as a camera- all cool features that help flesh out the game. It also allows for mini events like lock picking to take place on the GamePad screen while your game on the TV switches views for optimal awareness of your surroundings. Nintendo Land makes uses of the Gamepad with more camera control, full gameplay, secondary buttons, and as an input device. Balloon Trip (based on Balloon Fight from the NES), has you using the touch screen to control the wind to move your character. This is a very relaxed approach and very reminiscent of many DS games and will likely show up in many casual titles. More recent titles like Pikmin 3 used it as a map and for off TV play; the map always being ready allowed for fast multi-tasking. Of course some games may not use the GamePad at all; possibly those developers targeting more "hardcore" crowds will forego it entirely. That would be a shame; the GamePad does not really slow anything down and allows for more options. But using both the Controller and having the GamePad sitting on its stand to be used for other things could be an interesting feature as well.
The GamePad is an impressive controller and comfortable to use. It is not too heavy and the grips make it easy to hold up, relaxed in your lap or with one hand. All of the (familiar ABXY) buttons feel very responsive. The D-pad feels classic and well-sized and the joysticks are very responsive and smooth and click well when used as buttons. The shoulder buttons- not triggers like the Gamecube controller, but rather buttons like the Wii classic pro controller- are well made. There is a camera built into the controller which works well, in addition to loud and clear speakers. Battery life is not an issue- by the time your battery is exhausted you should probably be letting your system have a break anyway. And while the GamePad can not be charged by the system, the dock with the deluxe bundle makes charging it easy and looks nice on display.
The screen on the Gamepad is the main focus and really brings a lot to the table. It is as responsive as the DS and 3DS touch screens, just a lot bigger and with pretty good resolution. It is not going to be as clear as your HD TV screen but it does not look sloppy either. I also found that reaching for quick touches with my thumbs is easy (even with my shorter fingers). The last thing it does is work as a remote for your cable box and TV. You can switch the input on your TV or turn up the volume while playing without needing to get up or use another remote.
Nintendo has finally taken a big step into online gameplay and connectivity with the Miiverse. Sure, you have video chat, and friend lists but the MiiVerse integrates everything when you turn it on or play games. MiiVerse as an app is essentially where you manage your friends and profile but it also functions as a giant Nintendo forum or social hub where you post twitter-like updates and photos of your gaming experiences. It also allows you to chat with friends; hopefully later on it will be able to give you a notification when your friend responds.
While this is all cool, how it integrates directly into games is the best part. When playing New Super Mario U , MiiVerse updates can appear on the over world map relating to each level. Or when you are sitting in the Mii plaza the Miis that appear are essentially talking using the MiiVerse posts. You may even see Miis show up in games; the best example right now is in Nintendo Land where they walk around your theme park plaza or show up in the background of the games. MiiVerse can be accessed on the fly while playing any game too, so you can always update it or see what someone else is saying about the game. When you switch to MiiVerse your game pauses and that screen is what you can post to MiiVerse if you so desire. Certain games can even implement a sort of achievement system where they ask if you want to post to MiiVerse when you do something cool; New Super Mario U does this now.
All of this is linked and used with a Nintendo Network ID, aka your username. This makes users easy to friend and find, a big and welcome change to the deservedly maligned friend codes. Unfortunately these IDs are linked to the console where you register them; certainly this is related to some sort of privacy and protection policy, but inconvenient if your system should die or if you want to update to a special edition color later. Nintendo has hinted at changing this, but nothing has happened yet.
The Wii U is backwards compatible with the Wii and Wii U games support Wiimotes and other Wii accessories. Compatibility functions for Wii games cause you to boot to a new menu. You'll use your Wiimote at this point and only Wii accessories. Wii games do actually play in 1080p, as do all the menus and anything else. I played Goldeneye for a bit and you can see a difference, both good and bad. Some things in game look much smoother from the upscale but mistakes or ugly filters stand out more; the cut scenes looked really gross. This is because it is an upscale of resolution but no re-rendering is happening, no new filter or anything. This is not like emulation where new rendering processes can be applied; it is just a resolution increase. So you'll get good things and bad things from playing Wii games on Wii U- it depends on the game. Either way the backwards compatibility is a nice and welcome feature.
To sum it all up, I'm pretty happy with my Wii U and feel like it has a promising future even after a very slow year. My Wii had its moments of constant play and heavy dust collecting and even if my Wii U meets that same kind of fate I do not feel like my money was wasted. The system had a decent price point which is only better with the recent $ 50 price drop and has already provided that it can be very fun and opens a world of new gaming possibilities. As the game library increases we will see some fun games; If you are a social gamer and a social network lover it may be a system to check out just for that. The only issues the Wii U has is a sparse library, which should improve, and the fact that despite being a nice piece of hardware it will not hold up as well during this next generation of gaming. It is a sharp HD system but due to the small gap in power it will eventually fall to being a system for Nintendo exclusives again.

Bitcoin … Monetary Nirvana?
If you do not know what Bitcoin is, do a bit of research on the internet, and you will get plenty … but the short story is that Bitcoin was created as a medium of exchange, without a central bank or bank of issue being involved. Furthermore, Bitcoin transactions are supposed to be private, that is anonymous. Most interestingly, Bitcoins have no real world existence; they exist only in computer software, as a kind of virtual reality.
The general idea is that Bitcoins are 'mined' … interesting term here … by solving an increasingly difficult mathematical formula -more difficult as more Bitcoins are 'mined' into existence; again interesting- on a computer. Once created, the new Bitcoin is put into an electronic 'wallet'. It is then possible to trade real goods or Fiat currency for Bitcoins … and vice versa. Furthermore, as there is no central issuer of Bitcoins, it is all highly distributed, thus resistant to being 'managed' by authority.
Naturally proponents of Bitcoin, those who benefit from the growth of Bitcoin, insist rather loud that 'for sure, Bitcoin is money' … and not only that, but 'it is the best money ever, the money of the future' etc … Well, the proponents of Fiat shout just as loudly that paper currency is money … and we all know that Fiat paper is not money by any means, as it lacks the most important attributes of real money. The question then does Bitcoin even qualify as money … never mind it being the money of the future, or the best money ever.
To find out, let's look at the attributes that define money, and see if Bitcoin qualifies. The three essential attributes of money are;
1) money is a stable store of value; the most essential attribute, as without stability of value the function of numeraire, or unit of measure of value, fails.
2) money is the numeraire, the unit of account.
3) money is a medium of exchange … but other things can also fulfill this function ie direct barter, the 'netting out' of goods exchanged. Also 'trade goods' (chits) that hold value temporarily; and finally exchange of mutual credit; ie netting out the value of promises fulfilled by exchanging bills or IOU's.
Compared to Fiat, Bitcoin does not do too poorly as a medium of exchange. Fiat is only accepted in the geographic domain of its issuer. Dollars are no good in Europe etc. Bitcoin is accepted internationally. On the other hand, very few retailers currently accept payment in Bitcoin. Without the acceptance gains geometrically, Fiat wins … although at the cost of exchange between countries.
The first condition is a lot tougher; money must be a stable store of value … now Bitcoins have gone from a 'value' of $ 3.00 to around $ 1,000, in just a few years. This is about as far from being a 'stable store of value'; as you can get! Indeed, such gains are a perfect example of a speculative boom … like Dutch tulip bulbs, or junior mining companies, or Nortel stocks.
Of course, Fiat fails here as well; for example, the US Dollar, the 'main' Fiat, has lost over 95% of its value in a few decades … either fiat nor Bitcoin qualify in the most important measure of money; the capacity to store value and preserve value through time. Real money, that is Gold, has shown the ability to hold value not just for centuries, but for eons. Neither Fiat nor Bitcoin has this critical capacity … both fail as money.
Finally, we come to the second attribute; that of being the numeraire. Now this is really interesting, and we can see why both bitcoin and Fiat fail as money, by looking closely at the question of the 'numeraire'. Numeraire refers to the use of money to not only store value, but to in a sense measure, or compare value. In Austrian economics, it is considered impossible to actually measure value; after all, value resides only in human consciousness … and how can anything in consciousness actually be measured? Neverheless, through the principle of Mengerian market action, that is interaction between bid and offer, market prices can be established … if only momentarily … and this market price is expressed in terms of the numeraire, the most marketable good, that is money.
So how do we establish the value of Fiat …? Through the concept of 'purchasing power' … that is, the value of Fiat is determined by what it can be traded for … a so called 'basket of goods'. But his clearly implies that Fiat has no value of its own, rather value flows from the value of the goods and services it may be traded for. Causality flows from the goods 'bought' to the Fiat number. After all, what difference is there between a one Dollar bill and a hundred Dollar bill, except the number printed on it … and the purchasing power of the number?
Gold, on the other hand, is not measured by what it trades for; rather, absolutely, it is measured by another physical standard; by its weight, or mass. A gram of gold is a gram of gold, and an ounce of gold is an ounce of gold … no matter what number is engraved on its surface, 'face value' or otherwise. Causality is the opposite to that of Fiat; Gold is measured by weight, an intrinsic quality … not by purchasing power. Now, have you any idea of the value of an ounce of Dollars? No such thing. Fiat is only 'measured' by an ephemeral quantity … the number printed on it, the 'face value'.
Bitcoin is farther away from being the numeraire; not only is it simply a number, much as Fiat … but its value is measured in Fiat! Even if Bitcoin becomes internationally accepted as a medium of exchange, and even if it manages to replace the Dollar as the accepted 'numeraire', it can never have an intrinsic measure like Gold has. Gold is unique in being measured by a true, unchanging physical quantity. Gold is unique in storing value for thousands of years. Nothing else in reach of humanity has this unique combination of qualities.
In conclusion, while Bitcoin has some advantages over Fiat, rarely anonymity and decentralization, it fails in its claim to being money. Its advantages are also questionable; the intent is to limit the 'mining' of Bitcoins to 26,000,000 units; that is, the 'mining' algorithm gets harder and harder to solve, then impossible after the 26 million Bitcoins are mined. Unfortunately, this announcement could very well be the death knell of Bitcoin; already, some central banks have announced that Bitcoins may become a 'reserve' currency.
Wow, sounds like a major step for Bitcoin, does it not? After all, the 'big banks' seem to be accepting the true value of the Bitcoin, no? What this actually means is banks recognize that they could trade Fiat for Bitcoins … and to actually buy up the 26 million Bitcoins planned would cost a meagre 26 Billion Fiat Dollars. Twenty six billion Dollars is not even small change to the Fiat printers; it is about a week's worth of printing by the US Fed alone. And, once the Bitcoins bought up and locked up in the Fed's 'wallet' … what useful purpose could they serve?
There would be no Bitcoins left in circulation; a perfect corner. If there are no Bitcoins in circulation, how on Earth could they be used as a medium of exchange? And, what could the issuers of Bitcoin possibly do to defend against such a fate? Change the algorithm and increase the 26 million to … 52 million? To 104 million? Join the Fiat printing parade? But then, by the quantity theory of money, Bitcoin would start to lose value, just as Fiat supposedly loses value through 'over-printing' …
We come to the key issue; why search for a 'new money' when we already have the very best money, Gold? Fear of Gold confiscation? Lack of anonymity from an intrusive government? Brutal taxation? Fiat money legal tender laws? All of the above. The answer is not in a new form of money, but in a new social structure, one without Fiat, without Government spying, without drones and swat teams … without IRS, border guards, TSA thugs … on and on. A world of liberty not tyranny. Once this is accomplished, Gold will resume its ancient and vital role as honest money … and not a moment before.

In horse racing its sensible to decide how much money do you want in racing. This eases your path to money a little because now you have a straight shot to your goals. In the real world of racing you'll have to be more precise than "I want a lot of money" or "It's bound to come if I play the pick six", etc. Such a thing is not a solid plan and that's just what's needed. A goal and a simple flexible plan. It does not have to be complex but it has to be thought out as an achievable thing.
As an example of a very simple but firm horse racing plan:
(1) goal: $ 1.6 million.
(2) time frame: four years from now on or by my birth date.
(3) tracks to be played: Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park only.
(4) wagers to play: Pick 3, Pick 4 and Trifecta.
(5) field sizes to play: 8-11 field sizes.
(6) race types to play: allowance, handicap and stakes.
(7) ticket prices range: $ A for 8 field size. $ B for 9 field size. $ C for 10 field size. $ D for 11 field size. How much money do you want to make in racing?
Think for just a second how long you've been playing the horses and how much you've in fact made or profited. Do you know? Have you been keeping a steady record or log? Yes? No? Think for just a second just where you're at in the game and what it takes in the simple things that you're doing or should have been doing to reach your money goals. So one of the first things to do is decide permanently how much it would take to satisfy you money-wise. $ 10,000? $ 100,000? $ 1,000,000? $ 3,000,000?
How much and how you're going to get it. Let me give you a hint. Break horse racing into two large but equal parts. (1) put all matters to do with selecting, picking, choosing, predicting and determining the outcome of races on one side. (2) then put all matters to do with predicting and determining how much profit or money-making over several months or several years on the other side. This leads to two equally important halves. Handicapping and profitcapping. There are already two major books on each one that shows the way to apply their knowledge. So once again: how much money do you want to make in racing?
